What is Lipedema? 10 Signs You Might Have It

If you've been struggling with disproportionate fat on your legs and arms that doesn't respond to diet or exercise, you might have lipedema — and you're not alone.

As a certified nutrition coach living with lipedema since my teens, I know how frustrating it is to be told to "just diet more" when the real problem is something completely different. Lipedema affects an estimated 11% of women worldwide — yet most have never heard of it.

Here's what you need to know.


What is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by a symmetrical, disproportionate accumulation of fat — mainly in the legs, thighs, and sometimes arms. It is almost exclusively a women's condition and is often triggered or worsened by hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

It is NOT obesity. It is NOT caused by overeating. And it does NOT respond to normal diet and exercise the way regular fat does.


10 Signs You Might Have Lipedema

1. Your legs swell but your feet don't One of the most telling signs — the swelling stops at the ankle, leaving the feet unaffected. This creates a distinctive "cuff" appearance.

2. Diet and exercise don't reduce your leg size You can lose weight everywhere else but your legs stay the same. This is one of the most common reasons women with lipedema feel frustrated and misunderstood.

3. Your legs bruise easily without reason Lipedema tissue is fragile and bruises very easily — often without any obvious cause or impact.

4. Your legs are painful to touch Unlike regular fat, lipedema fat is tender and painful to the touch. Even light pressure can cause discomfort.

5. Fat distribution is uneven — larger below the waist There is a clear disproportion between the upper and lower body. The waist may be relatively slim while the legs are significantly larger.

6. Your skin feels different — soft and doughy The skin over lipedema areas often feels softer and more doughy than normal fat tissue. Small nodules may be felt under the skin in later stages.

7. Symptoms get worse before your period Hormonal fluctuations directly affect lipedema — many women notice increased swelling, pain, and heaviness in the days before their period.

8. Family members have the same pattern Lipedema has a strong genetic component. If your mother, sister, or aunt has similar leg proportions, there may be a hereditary pattern.

9. A feeling of heaviness in the legs A constant feeling of heaviness, tiredness, or pressure in the legs — especially at the end of the day — is very common with lipedema.

10. Swelling gets worse throughout the day Legs that are relatively normal in the morning but significantly more swollen and uncomfortable by evening are a classic lipedema pattern.


What Should You Do If You Recognize These Signs?

First — know that you are not alone and this is not your fault.

The next steps I recommend:

  • Seek a diagnosis — find a doctor or specialist who is familiar with lipedema. Unfortunately many doctors still don't recognize it, so you may need to advocate for yourself.
  • Start compression — medical grade compression garments can significantly reduce pain and swelling.
